VACS Program

Vision for Adapted Crops and Soils Capacity Activity (VACS Capacity)

The Vision for Adapted Crops and Soils (VACS) is an initiative launched in early 2023 by the U.S. Department of State, in partnership with the African Union and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations. Its primary goal is to enhance agricultural productivity and nutrition in Africa by focusing on climate-resilient crops and healthy soils.

In Zambia, VACS is being implemented through the Southern Africa Accelerated Innovation Delivery Initiative (AID-I) Rapid Delivery Hub. This program, in collaboration with organizations like CIMMYT and Afriseed, aims to reach over 35,000 smallholder farmers during 2023-2024. The focus is on scaling up high-yielding traits in legumes, which are crucial for nutrient-rich diets and climate resilience.

The initiative emphasizes the importance of indigenous and traditional crops, often referred to as “opportunity crops.” These crops are well-adapted to local conditions and offer nutritional benefits. By investing in these underutilized crops, VACS aims to build healthier soils and promote climate-resilient food systems in Zambia and across Africa.

Outcomes

Promotion of Diverse, Nutritious Crops
Advancement of Sustainable Land Use
Strengthening of Food Systems:

Through these efforts, VACS seeks to empower Zambian farmers to adapt to climate challenges, improve soil health, and enhance food security.
