Kagezi Seeds' flagship sustainability project, the Green Solutions Initiative, has completed its second full season of field-level operations. Designed to shift agricultural practices in rural communities toward more sustainable, climate-resilient systems, the initiative successfully delivered direct training in conservation agriculture to over 600 smallholder farmers in Central Province.

The training curriculum focuses on three core pillars of conservation agriculture: minimum mechanical soil disturbance (no-till or low-till), organic soil cover (mulching and crop residue management), and crop species diversification (intercropping and rotation with nitrogen-fixing legumes like cowpea and groundnuts). These practices work together to reduce soil erosion, improve water retention, and maintain crop productivity during dry spells.

"Healthy soil is a farmer's best defense against climate change. By teaching farmers to protect their soil biology and reduce chemical dependencies, we are helping them build resilient farms that require fewer expensive inputs." — Lizzy Katebe, Crop Agronomist

Practical Demonstrations and Field Schools

To ensure training translated into practice, Kagezi Seeds established community-based Farmer Field Schools. Led by our agronomy experts, these schools utilized local demonstration plots where farmers could compare conservation farming side-by-side with traditional conventional methods. Regular meetings throughout the crop cycle allowed farmers to observe weed control, moisture levels, and plant health in real time.

The feedback has been overwhelmingly positive. Farmers applying minimum tillage and mulching reported that their crops survived hot dry spells with minimal stress compared to plowed fields, which lost soil moisture rapidly. Many participants also reported significant reductions in labor requirements for land preparation, freeing up valuable time for other household activities.

Expanding the Conservation Network

The next phase of the Green Solutions Initiative will focus on integrating digital agronomic advisory tools, allowing trained community leaders to access weather forecasts and pest alerts on their mobile phones. Kagezi Seeds is committed to expanding the training network to reach additional districts in Southern Province in the upcoming crop season, making sustainable agriculture the norm rather than the exception.
